چکیده

Aged people, especially postmenopausal women are at increased risk of metabolic disorders such as obesity, which in turn raises the risk of developing further serious conditions, including diabetes [1,2], cancers, neurological disorders, hypertension, and other cardiovascular diseases [3]. Postmenopausal diabetes is induced by estrogen deficiency, which exacerbates insulin resistance [4,5]. The number of postmenopausal patients with diabetes has increased recently due to population aging; therefore, dietary strategies to reduce the risk of diabetes are expected to be necessary in order to improve postmenopausal health. OVX animals are used as a model of postmenopausal diabetes [68]. OVX mice show glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, and increased body weight [7,8]. This mini review aims to summarize recent findings in the area of weight and fat mass control by kudzu (Pueraria lobata) vine isoflavones and their biokinetics in OVX mice.

Chemical Profiling and Quantification of Isoflavone Phytoestrogens in Kudzu Using LC/UV/MSD

Method development for determination of isoflavones in kudzu was achieved by HPLC/UV/ESI-MSD. Using three kudzu species of Pueraria lobata, P. thomsonii and P. edulis, and analyzing the isoflavones separately by species and from different plant tissues (roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruits) in each species, a total of 25 isoflavones were identified by their molecular ions and characteristic...

Acute and Chronic Kudzu Improves Plasma Glucose Tolerance in Non-Diabetic CD-1 Mice

Previous studies demonstrate that kudzu root extract and its major isoflavone (puerarin) improve glucose metabolism in animal models of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes; however, these beneficial effects have not been investigated in normal glycemic mice. The present study investigates the effect of acute and chronic kudzu root extract supplementation on glucose tolerance in normoglycemic...

Protective activity of kudzu (Pueraria thunbergiana) vine on chemically-induced hepatotoxicity: in vitro and in vivo studies

BACKGROUND Kudzu (Pueraria thunbergiana) root has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. However, the vine of the kudzu plant has been considered waste material. This study aimed to investigate the hepatoprotective properties of the kudzu vine. METHODS We created 0 %, 30 %, 70 %, and 95 % ethanolic kudzu vine extracts. The isoflavone contents of kudzu vine extract were quantified by ...

Identification of puerarin and its metabolites in rats by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Puerarin (daidzein-8-C-glucoside) is the major bioactive isoflavone of kudzu root (the root of Pueraria lobata). Its metabolic fate, however, is not well-known. In this study, a sensitive and specific LC-ESI-MS/MS method for the determination of puerarin and its metabolites daidzein, dihydrodaidzein, and equol was developed for their analysis in biological samples. Two new metabolites of puerar...

The Root Extract of Pueraria lobata and Its Main Compound, Puerarin, Prevent Obesity by Increasing the Energy Metabolism in Skeletal Muscle

Radix Pueraria lobata (RP) has been reported to prevent obesity and improve glucose metabolism; however, the mechanism responsible for these effects has not been elucidated. The mechanism underlying anti-obesity effect of RP was investigated in high-fat diet (HFD) induced obese mice and skeletal muscle cells (C2C12). Five-week-old C5BL/6 mice were fed a HFD containing or not containing RP (100 ...
